Research Grant Programs
Research Mission Statement: To advance allograft and bioconstruct sciences
through research, teaching and education.
MTF was founded by academic orthopaedic surgeons
to assure distribution of tissue and support basic science research. There
are now 44 academic affiliates throughout the U.S.
Avenues of Funding Support Available to Academic Members: Size
of financial support, number of grants awarded and scope of interests
has increased over the life of the Foundation.
Directed Research: The MTF Board of Directors may request investigations
into clinical or basic science issues that are pertinent to the objectives
of the Foundation. The most recent directed research grant was the following:
MARS (Multi-Center ACL Revision Study). This research project is administered through the AOSSM Research Committee with support over three years totaling $465,000. The principle investigator is Kurt Spindler, MD, Vanderbilt University.
Directed research projects in previous years have included the following:
• Effects of Aging on Bone
• Evaluation of Bone Density Through Radiographic Techniques
• Effects of Processing and Low Dose Radiation on Cortical Bone Grafts
Allocation of Funds: Monies are awarded to each of the academic members
for their annual participation in recoveries of donor tissue and participation
in Foundation directorship. These funds are used to support clinical
or basic allograft science at the discretion of the members of the Board
of Trustees. Some fund usages in the past include the following:
• Support of Continuing Education and Training
Funds
• Travel Incentives for Residents and Fellows
• Purchase and Update of Equipment
• Seed Monies for New and Innovative Technologies
